Your engagement session is coming up and you are not sure what to wear for engagement photos?
This can be one of the hardest parts as you prepare for your session, so here are my top 10 tips for your engagement session!
Remember, these are just tips. If these tips don’t match up with what you are envisioning for your engagement photos, that is okay! I hope these 10 tips can at least provide you with inspiration to find what matches with your vision for the engagement photos.

Top 10 Tips On What To Wear For Your engagement session
1. Dress in something comfortable
Above all, choose an outfit that makes you feel like yourself. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. As a photographer, I’m sharing these tips to help you look your best in your photos. Therefore, your personal comfort should always come first. When you love what you’re wearing and feel good in it, your confidence will shine through.
2. Allow for movement
Since my shooting style involves lots of movement. I include piggyback rides, playing airplane, and more playful poses! I recommend wearing something that lets you move freely and comfortably. If you’re opting for a dress, consider a maxi style that won’t restrict your movement. I welcome you to bring a second outfit that is more casual. Think overalls or a jumpsuit, this ensures you have both vibes, classy and casual. Some photographers will charge extra for a second outfit, I include it in my packages. I want you to have a variety of looks and make the most of your engagement photos!
3. Consider the Location of Your Engagement Session
Wanting your engagement photos captured at the beach or the moutainside? Make sure your outfit suits the location and terrain of your shoot. An example, if we’re doing an adventurous session with lots of movement or uneven ground, high heels may not be the best choice. But if we’re shooting in a location with steady ground, feel free to rock those heels! The goal is to choose an outfit that complements the natural setting, rather than blending in with it.
4. Warm and Neutral Tones For Your Session
When selecting your color palette, I recommend opting for warm, neutral, and earthy tones. These colors photograph beautifully with a timeless feel. Avoid bright or neon colors, as they can be distracting in photos. That said, a pop of color in your accessories or as a layer can add a lovely touch. Dark colors are can be great as well. Dark colors create a slimming effect and won’t show sweat, especially ideal for summer sessions. 5. Consider Your Wedding Colors
When picking your engagement session colors, think about possibly incorporating tones that are similar to your wedding color palette. This creates a cohesive look for your photos and ensures they seamlessly fit into your overall wedding aesthetic. Plus, it’ll be lovely to showcase your engagement session by adding in photos to your guest book or on display during your big day.
6. Add a Touch of Pattern or Texture
If you’d like to incorporate a pattern for your engagement session, keep it subtle and minimal. Bold or busy patterns can be distracting. I recommend choosing something simple, like a small floral print, delicate animal print, or vertical stripes. Texture is another great way to add depth to your photos. Think a textured jacket, sweater, or a shirt with interesting details. A textured piece in your session can elevate your look without taking away from the overall vibe. 7. Compliment Each Other
Feel free to send me a photo of your outfit, and I’ll be happy to offer suggestions for what your partner could wear! Instead of going for a perfectly matching look, aim to coordinate around a statement piece with complementary colors. This creates a balanced, cohesive feel without being overly matchy-matchy.
8. Avoid Distractions
To keep the focus on you and your partner, I recommend avoiding any logos or graphic designs on your clothing. The same goes for flashy electronic watches, which can take attention away from the beauty of the moment. Simple, clean outfits always photograph best.
9. Wear Accessories
Accessories can add great visual interest to your look! Depending on the season, consider adding stylish pieces like wide-brimmed hats, scarves, jackets, belts, or even sentimental jewelry. These small details can elevate your outfit and create a more dynamic, layered look in your photos.
10. Outfit Ideas for Him
Gentlemen, I’ve got you covered too! For a polished yet relaxed look, consider wearing a denim jacket, well-fitted jeans, and a button-up patterned shirt. Closed-toe shoes, like stylish boots, always photograph well, no matter the season. I’d recommend skipping tennis shoes, shorts, or baseball hats for your engagement session. If you’re into hats, though, a stylish one can add a lot of personality to your look!
